The Bismarck Cancer Center (BCC) provides world-class cancer treatments and caring support for local patients so they can stay close to home and loved ones during their cancer journeys. In 1999, CHI St. Alexius Health and Sanford Health joined forces to build and operate the facility in order to bring needed technologies to the area.
At BCC, a highly-skilled radiation therapy team of oncology nurses, radiation therapists, a medical physicist and dosimetrists work with radiation oncologists to provide the best treatment possible. The staff is trained to care for patients with the same leading-edge technology often found in larger metropolitan areas, making BCC a leader in using state-of-the-art technology for the treatment of cancer.
And because there is much more to treating cancer than just treating the disease, the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation (BCCF) was established in 2007 to provide an array of services to help patients during their cancer journeys. BCCF is committed to providing hope, help, and healing that goes beyond radiation therapy treatments. The Foundation raises funds through business and private donations, fundraisers, and local and national grants. Funds are used to provide medical care and holistic care for the mind, body and spirit of the patients and their families.
The Foundation provides an amazing array of services to help patients during their cancer journeys. Donations to the Foundation make a huge difference in the lives of local patients because that money goes directly toward support services, such as:
Financial and Transportation Assistance: The Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation provides financial assistance to ease the burden and stress that battling cancer can have on patients. In addition, out-of-town patients are offered gas cards to make driving to treatments less costly.
Lodging Assistance: The Foundation helps supply fully furnished apartments to Bismarck Cancer Center patients for very low rates while they undergo radiation therapy treatments.
Support Groups: Three different support groups are available to patients—a breast cancer support group, an all-cancer support group, and a caregivers support group. In addition, the Bismarck Cancer Center provides information on support groups located throughout North Dakota.
Spiritual & Emotional Care: Bismarck Cancer Center has made a commitment to providing spiritual and emotional care as part of the center’s mission and philosophy of healing. The spiritual and emotional care program strives to promote emotional awareness, provide personal insight, improve communication between patients and others, help patients and their families cope, provide a space for fun and laughter, and connect patients with pastoral, religious, or spiritual care if requested.
REACH Program: REACH stand for Resources, Educate, Advocacy, Care, and Hope. Focusing on these five components, the program provides support and other services to patients who can reduce the stress of the patient and their family through all phases of treatment and recovery. The REACH Coordinator meets with every Bismarck Cancer Center patient to discuss their diagnosis and treatment plan, apply for programs that offer financial assistance, learn about life as a cancer survivor, and much more.
Nutrition & Dietary Care: As part of our wraparound services, a dietitian works with patients to help them maintain a healthy diet during their radiation therapy, modifying their plan if the side effects of treatment are affecting appetite.
Massage Therapy: At the Bismarck Cancer Center, 10-minute therapeutic massages are available for current patients after their treatments. These massages help relieve stress, reduce muscle tension and stiffness, foster faster healing, and provide many other physical and mental health benefits to patients.
Physical Therapy: Because cancer treatments take a toll on the body, survivors often feel profound fatigue and deconditioning. In cooperation with CHI St. Alexius Medical Center, the Foundation provides physical therapy evaluations for patients. The physical therapy program is designed to help increase a patient’s ability to live a normal and active life during and after cancer treatment.
Art Therapy: There are times when patients and cancer survivors have a difficult time expressing themselves. Other times, they just need a creative outlet. The Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation offers art therapy classes to help with the healing process and provide a source of creative, therapeutic self-expression.
Survivorship Care Program: The Foundation’s survivorship program helps the patient deal with the stress and emotion after they’ve finished treatment. During their last week of treatment, every Bismarck Cancer Center patient meets with a survivorship nurse who provides an individualized comprehensive follow-up and survivorship care map for each patient. The plan includes a written treatment summary, a recommended follow-up schedule, a list of short and long term side effects of the disease and treatments, a description of what to look for regarding reoccurrence, a chronological list of events in their cancer journey, and a list of various support systems within their community.
